Memento is composed of gem tintypes – miniature tintypes that were about 1” x 3/4” and were often displayed in little mats. After scanning a found gem tintype and digitally removing the subject’s face, I made a new collodion tintype with the altered image and then placed it back into the antique mat. The small size of these tintypes suggests both intimacy and a fragility: these people were clearly once very important to their loved ones and now their identities are forgotten. These little mementos are all that remain to remind us that they once lived.
